The first thing a patient encounters upon meeting doctors, is the invitation to tell them our story. We are given no training for this. Doctors, on the other hand, are taught, as medical students, to proceed in a discrete, linear way from a patient’s history, to a physical exam, to tests ordered and results analysed. Doctors are heroes before their tale even begins. Patients are rarely perceived as heroic. We fall down the rabbit hole upon diagnosis.
